Chair for Biodiversity in Yemen

Research Chair for Biodiversity and Nature Conservation in Yemen

Yemen has a rich fauna and flora. Studies on the biodiversity of Yemen are rare; it is obvious that the information on the classification and distribution of the fauna and flora in this country is not fully known or studied systematically. Furthermore, local conservation challenges include loss and degradation of habitat, climate change, pollution and invasive species. These cause unhealthy ecosystems putting wildlife at great risk of disease. The AU Research Chair for Biodiversity and Conservation in Yemen aims to protect endemic species in its natural sites by conducting research, establishing a database, conducting field surveys, advising on laws and legislations, supporting the establishment of nature reserves, studying the impact of climate change on species, increasing the environmental awareness and working with local and international partners and specialists. The project will involve the professional development of faculty members, postgraduate students, researchers and the related sectors in the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and official environmental authorities, in addition to the local community members and organizations through providing resources in the public domain. Furthermore, regional networks will be established and prioritized. Read on the First Summer Scientific Forum which was launched in August 2023 to commence the activities of the Chair for Biodiversity and Nature Conservation in Yemen.
